How the Journey Began

My journey into the world of burlesque began a few years ago. A friend suggested that I be a vendor at a burlesque show. I thought it was worth a shot, so I went for it. What I didn't realize is this would start me on one of the greatest journeys of my life.

Before I vended my first burlesque show, I really didn't know what it was. During the show I sat there mesmerized. These women were so courageous. How were they taking their clothes off for a room full of strangers? But these weren't seasoned burlesque performers. Every lady I saw that night was performing for the first time, after 6 weeks of training. I was more than a little intrigued.

I continued to vend at the shows until last December when the lady responsible for these productions had a special for her introductory class:  $19.00. A two hour class for $19.00; I was in (and very excited about it).

So I went to the Unleash Your Inner Bombshell workshop presented by the Burlesque Experience. It was a magical two hours. In those two hours I got a taste of what it must be like to be up on stage, to bump your hips, grind, peel gloves, and work a boa. I had so much fun and my confidence came up just a little bit.  I wanted to continue but I knew I wasn't ready for the full on Burlesque Experience.

Enter The Dirty Blonde, headmistress of the Dallas School of Burlesque. She started to tell me what was offered at the school and what a membership entailed, to which my reaction was basically "Okay! Take my money!" I dove right in, taking classes like Big Bottom Girls (a twerk-out), belly dancing, and fan class. Over the next few months I tried every class at least once. I made a number of great friends and had a blast at every single class!

Some people set New Year's resolutions. I set goals for the year. My 2014 goal was to do the Burlesque Experience and perform before an audience by the end of 2014. How little did I know in January just how much this year's goal would change my life. And so the journey began...
